Dear Colleagues,
We’re writing to share a statement from the Writing About Writing Network in response to recent developments:
As an independent professional network centered on pedagogy and scholarship, we stand in solidarity with the leadership team and members of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). We find the decision by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to de-charter the largest professional organization in writing studies ill-advised and deeply troubling.
In effect, this moment clarifies our identity and purpose. The heart of our network has never been only tied to our official status within a single centralized professional organization; rather, we are an independent action group oriented around our pedagogy, our scholarship, and our community.
Moving forward, the WAW Network is fully and happily committed to seeking affiliations with relevant professional organizations and maintaining a presence at their meetings.
Rather than centering our efforts on a single conference, we are doubling down on what matters most: our community and our ongoing work. To that end, we want to emphasize the following:
- Continued Programming: We are continuing our consistent programming, maintaining our regular schedule of online meetings, pedagogical workshops, and collaborative events just as we have done every year, independent of any single conference venue.
- 2027 Conference Presence: In keeping with our commitment to sharing our scholarship, our 2027 on-site WAW panel is still planned to take place. We are currently securing a new venue and will announce the details as soon as possible to give panelists sufficient time for adjustments.
- Shared Coalitions: We remain firmly resolved to build and support coalitions among scholars across all fields of our discipline, strengthening our network for the work ahead.
Finally, the WAW Network welcomes all educators and scholars interested in working with us to visit our website, join our listserv, and participate in our upcoming virtual meetings as we continue to grow the Rhetoric, Writing, and Composition community.
